What should universities actually be for?

A university should not be expected to preserve an academic discipline simply because that discipline has historically existed within the institution.

Universities should give greater institutional support to fields that address demonstrated skills shortages or important social needs.

Some university disciplines have become sufficiently detached from their original scholarly purposes that they should be substantially reformed or discontinued.
